FAIR HILL, MD — May 14, 2015 — Last weekend the 64th Brandywine Scout Group hosted a Brownsea Training Camp (BTC) at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area. BTC is a weekend-long camping trip for adult Rover applicants of the Baden-Powell Service Association (BPSA) to learn all the necessary skills to pass the Tenderfoot tests and prepare them to teach other scouts these skills. The weekend culminates in an investiture ceremony where the Rover applicants are welcomed as Rover Squires.

The 64th Brandywine invested 7 Rover Squires on Sunday, May 10: Lisa Heller and Ken Anderson of the 5th Brooklyn, of Brooklyn, NY; Amy Kwasnicki of the 34th Woodland Rangers of Philadelphia, PA; Richard Sowdon and Garrick Anson from the 17th Black Bear of Woodbridge, VA; Bill Steuer from the 64th Brandywine of West Grove, PA; and Clarke Green of Kennett Square, PA.

In addition, the 64th Brandywine was proud to hold a knighting ceremony for Cynthia Kwan, the Group Scoutmaster of the 34th Woodland Rangers of Philadelphia, PA. Becoming a Rover Knight indicates a commitment to the Ideals of Scouting and a living a life of service to others.

Representing BPSA leadership and and serving as trainers for BTC were Northeast Regional Commissioner Richard Saunders of Glens Falls, NY, Assistant Regional Commissioner Michael Dobbins of Yonkers, NY, and Social Media Director David Bielski of Ashford, CT.

During the BTC, and under direction of the park staff, the Rover Scouts also completed a service project, constructing and installing a firewood crib for the Cockerham Youth Campsite at Fair Hill.

“It was a great experience, and I feel more connected to Scouting and more committed to serving my group,” said Group Scoutmaster Richard Sowdon of the 17th Black Bear.

The BPSA was formed in the U.S. in 2006 as a co-ed, inclusive, secular and traditional-style Scouting association. The association continues the principles and practices of Scouting laid down by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907 that have been developed and refined in Scout associations around the world for over a century. The BPSA is totally independent of, and not affiliated with, either the Boy Scouts of America or the Girls Scouts of the USA; the BPSA is a member of the World Federation of Independent Scouts (WFIS).
